Anticipating The Finish. William R. Beebe

William R. Beebe was born in Bethesda, Maryland, in 1956. He is a marine artist who has been painting the coast for more than 18 years. He has many wonderful childhood memories of times spent on the Chesapeake Bay sailing, canoeing and crabbing but it was after his first trip to Maine in the mid-1980s that he discovered his love of the New England coastline. It was 1990 when he made the life changing decision to pursue his art full-time and move to Maine, where he and his wife lived on the coast for 12 years. This is where he honed his skills in painting schooners, lobsterboats, lighthouses, islands, and coastal villages.

In 2005 Bill made the commitment to dedicate himself to capturing on canvas the historical wooden schooners of the 19th and 20th centuries. He is passionate about portraying these beautiful schooners in a yacht-like fashion while racing or under full sail. His paintings highlight the ship's sleek lines, their speed and racing ability.

Bill is a graduate of the University of Maryland in Fine Art. Bill's paintings are in major private and corporate collections in the United States and abroad. His painting, On Monhegan Island, has been featured in several publications including American Art Review October 2000 issue and a book entitled The Art of Monhegan Island, published in 2004. From 1994 to 2002 Bill was the resident artist for MBNA America. Bill currently resides in Williamsburg, Virginia, with his wife where he continues his marine painting and to be inspired by his love for the American schooners and life along the coast.

Mae's Peony Pot. Carol Christie

A native of Michigan and the youngest of seven children, Carol Christie dabbled with pastels and sketched most of her childhood. From her earliest memories, she recalls wanting to be an artist. After studying Art Education at Central Michigan University, she relocated to Atlanta, Georgia in 1969 to raise her family. Carol continued to develop her craft over the years, taking numerous academic courses and workshops, but believes her real education has been in her studio. She began exhibiting her bold and colorful work in 1990 and is now being represented by fine art galleries across the Southern and Northeastern United States.

Carol paints daily and feels that experience has been her best teacher. Her process is one of spontaneity – quick sketches that gradually evolve into tapestries of bold color and shape, incorporating generous brushstrokes and Christie’s signature marks. Colors are chosen intuitively. "If I think about it too long, or analyze which color to use, or what direction I want to take, I usually overwork my painting.”

Carol’s offbeat style and inspiration for painting is rooted in her appreciation for the colorful works of Matisse and the energetic calligraphic strokes reminiscent of Raoul Dufy. “It’s my hope that the viewer experiences my work on a visceral level, seeing and FEELING the energy throughout.” Her work has been described as playful yet thoughtful; electric yet warm and emotive; sophisticated yet primitive."It just makes me smile" is a recurring comment of her collectors. It’s this heartwarming reaction that keeps Carol painting the masterpieces that she refers to as "feel good" art.

Zanzibar Lisa Egeli

Lisa Egeli’s paintings are moving and sophisticated portrayals of the people and places we treasure. Her portraits and landscapes, in oil and pastel, have been featured in many exhibits and permanent collections since her professional career was launched in 1988, when she graduated from the American Academy of Art in Chicago. The State of Georgia Department of Natural Resources selected her for their Artist’s Residency on Sapelo Island in April 2003, then again for Ossabaw Island in November 2003. Lisa was selected to participate in the plein air painting events “Paint Annapolis” in 2005, and “Plein Air Easton” in 2006 and 2007. Her paintings won awards in both events. A solo show in Baltimore in late 2007 exhibited paintings from travels in east Africa, the Everglades of Florida, and her home state of Maryland. Her goal, whether portraying the wilds of Alaska, the endangered mountain gorillas of Uganda, or the haunting marshes of Maryland’s Eastern Shore, is to capture a sense of place, and also capture that combination of awe and intimacy that is the essence of an encounter with nature.

The Nellie Byrd Mary Ekroos

Mary Ekroos was born in Maryland in 1941 into a family of artists. Her father, Bjorn Egeli, was a classically trained portrait painter of national reputation. From her early twenties Mary has worked continuously as an artist always seeking to enlarge her understanding of her craft. She began her career doing portraits both in oils and pastels and while she found a great deal of satisfaction in this work, she also maintained a steady flow of landscapes, marines and other genre.

Since moving to the Eastern Shore of Maryland in 1972 her paintings of the Chesapeake Bay skipjacks, workboats and waterways have been acclaimed for their authenticity and artistic excellence. She has won many awards and has been in national and regional juried shows. Her paintings have been shown in the Maryland State House, The Academy of Art Museum in Easton, MD, and in the Cummer Museum in Florida. She is a signature member of the American Society of Marine Artists and is a past Vice President of that organization. Valley Light. David Heath

David G. Heath is one of the most talented landscape painters of our time. His work incorporates a visionary approach to the execution of traditional realism, reminiscent of the Early American painters. “My greatest love is to explore nature and its peacefulness,” David explains. “My second greatest love is to capture the atmosphere and mood of the places that are special to me. In the process, I paint not only with my hand and eye, but with my heart and soul. Over the years I’ve become so much more aware of the beauty and serenity of the great outdoors. In each painting I seek to do more than to create a statement. I like to stir the viewer’s imagination-communicate mood and atmosphere.” Born in 1950, David Heath is a native of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountain region. He attended Central Virginia Community College and Virginia Commonwealth University, where he studied commercial art. In 1973 he began an intensive personal study of fine art, concentrating on the Old Masters and the Early American painters, with greatest emphasis on the Hudson Valley River School. David’s award-winning paintings have been exhibited in numerous group and one person shows. Private collectors include celebrities from both the political world and the entertainment industry. David’s official Bicentennial painting is now on permanent display in the Lynchburg City Hall, in Lynchburg, Virginia. Corporate collectors include: The Babcock and Wilcox Corporation, Central Fidelity Bank, Crestar Bank, Sovran Bank, and Westvaco Corporation. David’s style is a combination of realism and luminism, a mixture of fantasy and atmosphere which arrests the viewer, stimulates the imagination, and provides a unique experience.

Evening Primrose by John Holub. John Holub

Born on Long Island, New York, John Holub was always interested in art. Even as a child, he spent much of his time painting and drawing. Years later, after a tour in the United States Air Force and a move to Maine, he finally decided to pursue his childhood fascination. He began with pen-and-ink renderings. Later on he developed his skill as a water color painter. He has since gone on to gouache and oil. John Holub's paintings, distinguished by their varied brush stroke and rich color, appeal to those who enjoy the tradition of open-air painting. To John, the essence of the painting begins on the scene. "I will use either oil, watercolor, gouache, or pencil, as long as I record what excited me about the scene," he says. "I like to focus on surprises, the unexpected, an object of beauty that has been overlooked. Sometimes it's commonplace, sometimes the unusual." John paints what excites him. When a scene inspires him, his painting is more likely to communicate that excitement to the viewer. John Holub travels to a number of different places throughout the year to paint on location. While traveling, he also gathers information to be developed further at his studio in Winthrop, Maine, an area of lakes, streams, and rolling farmland in the central part of the state. John's paintings have won numerous awards and appear in private and corporate collections in the United States and abroad.

Still Life With Jug Jim Rodgers

Jim Rodgers’ paintings, which range from luscious pastoral scenes to quiet still life, reflect a richness in tone and color that comes from over 30 years of professional study and travel in the United States and abroad. A resident of Dover, New Jersey, his early training and long affiliation with the Arts Students League in New York enabled him to study with such masters as Frank Mason, Gregg Kreutz, and Richard Pionk. Later, he was introduced to Art Maynard of the Ridgewood Art Institute of New Jersey, where he studied landscape along with portraiture. Primarily, his focus has been on traditional and classical attitudes in rendering landscape, still life, florals and genre scenes. Classical training has been augmented by wanderlust, as Jim traveled throughout the United States, working as an artist. At times he has lived and worked in New Orleans, Florida, Connecticut, Nevada, and Ohio, as well as England and France. Today, he frequents Lancaster, Pennsylvania to capture the quiet, sylvan landscapes of farm country on canvas. Jim’s intention is to capture the mood of a scene, particularly a landscape, and help the viewer feel the subject as he experienced it, “en plein air.” He is especially fond of capturing scenes in the late afternoon and early evenings. Whether the work evokes joy, rapture, or quiet contemplation, Jim’s pieces all stand out for their rich tones and exquisite classical rendering. Rodgers' work is in public and private collections, and he has received numerous awards. He has also been affiliated with the Salmagundi Club and Delaware Art Museum.

Painting by Frank Wilson Frank Wilson

The son of a sculptor, Frank Wilson has been painting, drawing and sculpting since 1964. The artist has won many awards for his paintings and his porcelain sculptures of nature. His work has been featured in galleries in New York, New England and Switzerland. The hills and mountains surrounding the small Vermont village he lived in are the inspiration for his artistic creations. Nature is the common denominator for this multi-talented artist. Through porcelain forest sculptures the artist captures the beauty of changing leaves, mushrooms and vegetation. Cross country skiing by moonlight has spawned a series of "nocturnal" watercolors. These unique paintings combine an air brush and watercolor technique that provides a special photographic effect. Other paintings of nature utilize acrylics to highlight the atmospheric quality of mountain vistas and winding trails. Frank Wilson combines his love of art and nature to give enjoyment to others. Through his art he conveys an awareness of place and a reverence for nature that transcends time.
